The Lanzarote List: Architecture, Volcanoes, Wine and César Manrique Magic

Lanzarote is not your typical island escape. It’s volcanic, raw, sculptural and quietly beautiful.

the kind of place that makes you slow down and look twice.

The List: Places to Visit in Lanzarote

This is not an exhaustive guide to Lanzarote, but a curated list of the places we visited, loved and would recommend if you want a mix of architecture, volcanic landscapes, wine and a little bit of island magic.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

  1. César Manrique Foundation — genuinely the best place to start. His home is built into volcanic bubbles and it makes complete sense once you're inside.

  2. Jardín de Cactus - minimal, graphic, very him. Give it an hour and don't rush the photos.

  3. Jameos del Agua - a volcanic tunnel turned cultural space. One of those places that shouldn't work but absolutely does.

  4. LagOmar Museum - carved into rock, slightly glamorous, a bit mysterious. Omar Sharif once owned it, which explains a lot.

  5. Mirador del Río interior - everyone goes for the view but the building itself is the thing. White curves, integrated bar, very considered.

VOLCANIC LANDSCAPES

  1. Cueva de los Verdes - darker and stranger than you expect. Let your eyes adjust and just go with it.

  2. Timanfaya - lunar, raw, genuinely dramatic & Hot!. You'll feel like you've landed somewhere else entirely.

  3. Green Lagoon - Charco de los Clicos — green water, black sand, red rock. The colour palette alone is worth stopping for.

  4. El Golfo village - tiny fishing village right next to the lagoon. Colourful boats, black beach, very easy to love.

  5. Ciudad Estratificada - Los Roferos — a roadside stop that looks like a film set. Sculptural rock, desert textures, oddly beautiful.

  6. Montana Corona - Jameos from above — a short hike that almost no one does. The views over the lava tube system are properly dramatic.

VIEWS & SCENIC DRIVES

  1. Mirador del Río - Manrique designed the viewpoint too, of course he did. Go at sunset if you can possibly manage it.

  2. La Geria - vines growing in black volcanic ash in little craters. The landscape is so strange and so specific it stays with you.

  3. Playa de Papagayo - calm turquoise water against black and red cliffs. My favorite to spend the beach day.

VILLAGES & LOCAL CHARM

  1. Teguise - white façades, quiet streets, no real agenda required. Have a coffee, wander, resist buying a linen shirt (or don't).

  2. Haría - greener and slower than everywhere else on the island. The valley of a thousand palms, a weekend craft market, genuinely lovely.

WINE & FOOD

  1. Bodega Rubicón - a lovely stop in La Geria. The Rubicón wine is delicious!!! and the setting does most of the work.

  2. Bodega El Grifo - the oldest winery in the Canaries, with a small wine museum attached. For the person in your group who always wants to know more.

  3. El Diablo restaurant at Timanfaya - food cooked over volcanic heat. The menu is simple since it has a homemade vibe. But still delicious.

  4. Restaurante El Toro - proper sit-down dinner, generous portions, ideal after a long day of driving around looking at things.

  5. Restaurante Jameos del Agua - The setting is absurdly good and the food surprisingly exquisite! The whole service was top!
